Note from Allison: Today’s article is a guest post. Please enjoy this review of the health-foodie paradise, True Food Kitchen, from my very own dad, Kimball.
I headed to True Food Kitchen one night for dinner and asked the driver to take me to their Phoenix location in the Biltmore Fashion Park area. (In Arizona, True Food Kitchen has one restaurant in Phoenix and one in nearby Scottsdale, along with locations in California, Colorado and most recently, Texas.) I later found out that the location I visited in Phoenix, is the original True Food Kitchen, opened up by Sam Fox and Dr. Weil.
As they only do reservations for larger parties, I was advised to show up before 6 p.m. to be sure I got a table. And thankfully, I did. The place was hopping, and quickly filled up by 6:30. The first impression as you walk in the door is how modern, fresh and very open the restaurant feels, with the kitchen staff in full view but at a distance, adding to the atmosphere but not distracting.
This was my first time with their menu so I was having trouble deciding what kind of appetizer I could have. My waitress suggested a half starter and half salad to make the choice easier. I had a caramelized onion tart (with smoked garlic, fig and gorgonzola on top) and a harvest salad (with squash, apple, pomegranate, walnut and goat cheese, with balsamic vinaigrette). The waitress-suggested wine pairing was a glass of red Fox Block Eight, a New Zealand Pinot Noir made just for this restaurant. The pairing was perfect and the appetizers peaked my appetite. They were fresh, light and incredibly flavourful.
If you are ever in the Phoenix area, do yourself a favour and spend an evening at True Food Kitchen.
